Former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested in a northeast Delhi riot case, was granted one-week interim bail for his sister’s wedding on Monday.
Umar Khalid was granted relief from December 23 to December 30 by Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat.
Former student leader Khalid had applied for two weeks’ interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
In February 2020, 53 people died and over 700 were injured in riots allegedly orchestrated by Mr Khalid, who was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code.
More details? According to Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, Khalid will be released on bail on 23 December and must surrender on 30 December. According to reports, he also said there would be conditions attached.
Khalid was represented by Senior Advocate Trideep Pais, while the Delhi Police were represented by Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad.
