Gujarat Bridge Collapse: One of the accused in the Gujarat bridge collapse tragedy, which killed 135 people, testified in court that the tragedy was God’s will.
Deepak Parekh, who managed the Oreva Company responsible for maintaining the 150-year-old bridge, made the comment. Nine people were arrested after the bridge collapsed on Sunday.
It was God’s will that such an unfortunate event occurred, he told Chief Judicial Magistrate MJ Khan.
The cable of the bridge was “rusted” and had not been replaced by the company that renovated it, Morbi Deputy Superintendent of Police PA Zala testified.
Without government approval or quality testing, the bridge reopened to the public on October 26. During maintenance and repair, only the platform was replaced. There was no oiling or greasing of the cable for the bridge. When the cable broke, it became rusted. The police officer said the incident would not have happened had the cable been repaired.
According to the prosecutor, the contractors who repaired the bridges were not qualified to maintain public infrastructure.
However, these contractors were given repair work on the bridge both in 2007 and in 2022, the prosecutor said.
Since the cables were not replaced, they snapped under the weight of the new flooring. Four-layered aluminium sheets used in the flooring increased the weight of the bridge.
According to locals, Oreva’s Managing Director Jaysukhbhai Patel has not been seen since the tragedy, despite publicly claiming that the bridge would last eight to ten years. He was last seen at the reopening of the bridge with his family.
It is locked and abandoned at the Oreva Company’s farmhouse in Ahmedabad.
Oreva’s top bosses and the Morbi municipal officials who awarded the company the contract are not named in the police FIR.
The Oreva Group’s Deepak Parekh and two subcontractors who repaired the bridge were taken into custody by the police until Saturday. There are five other men in judicial custody, including security guards and ticket booking clerks.
