Asia Cup Jay Shah: India registered a hard-fought five-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022, with Hardik Pandya hitting spinner Mohammad Nawaz to end the proceedings with a maximum of two balls to spare. While the win paved the way for celebrations among Indian fans across the world, one thing caught the attention of many.
After hitting the winning shot by Pandya, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was seen refusing to hold the Indian national flag, and was heavily criticized. After the match ended, one of Shah’s fellow spectators was seen offering the Indian flag to celebrate the victory, which he politely declined.
Why did BCCI secretary Jay Shah refuse to bear the Indian flag?
While Twitter and politicians slammed Shah for not celebrating by waving the tricolour, it is learned that Shah had to follow the rules of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) as he is the current president of the ACC. “Because he is the president of the Asian Cricket Council. And as per the code of conduct, they have to show neutrality against all stakeholders”, the tweet read.
I will win like this on unilateral victory: Rohit Sharma
Meanwhile, after India’s win, skipper Rohit Sharma lauded the team for their effort. In a post-match presentation, he said, “Halfway through the innings, we still had faith.” “That’s the kind of trust we want to put in this group where you’re not in the game and you still manage to pull it off. We want to make sure all of them know what to do in between. Sufficient clarity has been given. I will win unilaterally like this.
“The fast bowlers have done very well in the last 12 months. We were challenged many times but overcoming those challenges will take us forward. Since Hardik’s return to this team, he has been brilliant. IPL was also great. We all know his batting qualities, he has been brilliant with the bat ever since he came into the team,” said Rohit.
