On a two-day tour, opposition leaders arrived in Imphal today afternoon. According to accounts, they would go to Churachandpur in a helicopter.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, Sushmita Dev of the Trinamool, Kanimozhi of the DMK, Manoj Kumar Jha of the RJD, and JDU leader Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh are some of the other members of the delegation. They are making their first trip to the state since the Opposition front INDIA was established.

Their trip coincided with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey’s trip to Churachandpur, where she met with victims and assured them of the safety and assistance of the BJP-led federal government and the state government.

On a two-day tour, the opposition leaders arrived in Imphal this afternoon and took a helicopter to Churachandpur. There, they reportedly ran into members of the civil society, women’s organisations, and Kuki tribe elders. Before returning to Imphal, the group met with Meitei community members and visited relief camps to meet with victims of violence, according to sources.

In addition to criticising the opposition lawmakers, the BJP has repeated the alleged mistreatment of women in Rajasthan and West Bengal. This is simply for show. Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress stated, “We will present the victims’ testimonies in parliament. We would have been pleased if the PM had taken an all-party delegation to Manipur. However, India is here to be among the people, unlike his NDA counterparts who have never visited.

Since the Monsoon Session began this month, the Manipur issue has caused a stalemate in parliament, with the Opposition MPs demanding a lengthy discussion on it as well as a statement from the Prime Minister in parliament. However, the administration has claimed that Amit Shah, the home minister, will address the opposition.

In a major show of strength by the Meitei community in Imphal, the powerful civil society body COCOMI led a massive rally with thousands of people from different communities participating. They raised the demand for an NRC exercise and sought protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity.

The Congress has also put forth a no-confidence motion against the administration, which will be discussed in parliament. The Lok Sabha Speaker has given his approval to the resolution, but the no-trust vote has not yet been scheduled.

The government of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who has thus far refused to give in to demands of resignation, has decided to convene an assembly session at the end of this month or early August. At least 180 people have died and thousands have been displaced since the violence broke out on May 3.
