Fake fielding: In a rain-curtailed but thrilling match at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, India defeated Bangladesh and strengthened their chances of qualifying for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals.
In the rain-curtailed match, Team India won by 5 runs, however, after the match, Bangladesh player Nurul Hasan who remained not-out till the end accused Virat Kohli of doing ‘fake fielding’, and the on-field umpires should award Shakib Al Hasan & Co 5 penalty runs.
After the India vs Bangladesh match on Wednesday, Nurul spoke to the media about how umpires did not pay attention to Virat Kohli’s fake fielding and how it ultimately cost them the match.
As Narul said at the press conference, “We all saw that the ground was wet…Eventually, when we talk about these things, there was also a fake throw. It could have been a five-run penalty. The fake fielding video of Virat Kohli went viral on social media following Narul’s statement, and fans were divided over what was happening.
As seen in the Virat Kohli fake fielding video, Litton Das played the ball toward the deep off-side field off Axar Patel in the seventh over of the second innings.
Arshdeep Singh threw the ball straight to the keeper, but Kohli, who was standing at point, acted as if the ball had been thrown to him, so he acted as if he had thrown it to the non-striker end to outfox the batter running towards the keeper. At the time, the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Chris Brown, did not take action, and the Bangladesh batters – Najmul Hossain Shanto was the other – did not draw attention to it.

What does ICC’s law suggest for Fake fielding?
As per ICC’s Cricket’s Law 41.5, pertaining to unfair play, prohibiting the “deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of [the] batter”, and if an incident is deemed to be a breach, the umpire can declare that particular delivery as dead ball, awarding the batting side five runs.
