Semi-Final Scenario Explained: Defeating Bangladesh in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 was a big step forward for the Indian cricket team. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa remain in the running for a spot in the knockout stages. With Pakistan’s victory over the Proteas, the semi-finals qualification scenario has been blown wide open. India is assured of the group winner’s spot if they win their last Super 12 match against Zimbabwe.
What if the match is canceled?
Multiple matches have been rained out during this year’s T20 World Cup. Even though the rain curse hasn’t been as devastating in Group 2, it has caused some important matches to be abandoned in Group 1, leading to a chaotic situation for semi-final qualification.
The No. 1 spot is currently occupied by India with 6 points, followed by South Africa (5 points) and Pakistan (4 points). India and Zimbabwe will share a point even if no 5-over-a-side contest is played in their match. Then India’s tally will be 7.
A scenario like this would result in India qualifying for the semi-finals, but they wouldn’t be guaranteed to advance. In such a scenario, South Africa would be able to take the No. 1 spot in the group by beating the Netherlands.
The winner of the Pakistan-Bangladesh match can only reach the semi-finals if South Africa loses to the Netherlands. In the event of a Proteas victory, both Pakistan and Bangladesh would be eliminated from the tournament since both South Africa and India would have 7 points.
The T20 World Cup does not have a reserve day for any of the group matches. In case of rain, a reserve day is only triggered for the semifinals and finals.
