Climate talks in Egypt: The UAE will continue to supply oil and gas to the world as long as it is needed, said His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday at the start of two weeks of climate talks in Egypt.
In addition to being one of Opec’s largest producers, the Gulf nation also invests in renewable energy in order to reduce its carbon footprint.
With only one planet to live on, ladies and gentlemen, it is imperative that we partner and work together in a spirit of determination and optimism to address this common challenge. Sheikh Mohamed sees this as an opportunity to innovate and diversify our economy.
According to him, the UAE is considered a responsible supplier of energy and will continue to play this role for as long as the world needs oil and gas.
We will continue to focus on lowering carbon emissions emanating from the oil and gas sector in the UAE, which is among the least carbon intensive in the world.”
Egypt’s Conference of the Parties (COP) is the latest in decades of UN talks to try to curb climate change caused by fossil fuel use.
The UAE will host next year’s COP28 summit in Dubai’s Expo City, which will assess the implementation of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the UAE president, his country was among the first in the Gulf region to announce its intention to become carbon neutral by 2050 and signed a $100 billion agreement last week with the United States to add 100 gigawatts of renewable energy worldwide by 2035.
“This is not a new role for us; our Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, directed us to stop all gas flaring decades ago, laying the foundation for sustainability in the UAE and safeguarding the environment and natural resources.”
As a result, we have spent decades working towards diversifying our economy, and building our capabilities in the renewable and clean energy sector. “We are aiming to drive sustainable economic and social growth for both the UAE and the rest of the world, as well as for generations to come.”
The Sheikh stressed the importance of collaboration between the international communities in finding practical climate action solutions, telling the audience they are meeting at a critical time for our planet.
Our goal is to ensure that women are well represented, as well as to engage youth from around the world, channeling their energy and passion towards finding sustainable solutions.”
It is our pleasure to extend an open invitation to everyone to collaborate toward finding and implementing practical solutions that create new opportunities for long-term economic growth worldwide,” Sheikh Mohamed concluded.
