South Africa Penalised for Rare Occurrence: In Monday’s T20 World Cup Group 2 match between South and Zimbabwe, a rare event took place on the cricket field. In Zimbabwe’s innings, the incident occurred on the third ball of the ninth over.
South Africa’s Anrich Nortje bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to Shumba. The batter attempted a reverse scoop but failed in executing it. The ball went towards the fine-leg fielder, who then threw it at wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.
In an effort to throw the ball after collecting, the keeper threw one of his gloves on the surface, but the ball touched the glove, so Zimbabwe were awarded five extra runs in accordance with cricket laws. An object intentionally placed on the field of play was hit by the ball, resulting in a penalty.
It took a moment for the South African players, including de Kock and Notje, to figure out why the umpire penalized them.
