On March 14, the US Air Force released a minute-long declassified video of a Russian Su-27 intercepting a US Air Force MQ-9 in international airspace over the Black Sea.
The video, posted on Twitter by the US European Command, shows the Russian jet approaching the US Air Force MQ-9 drone, which starts releasing fuel as it passes over it. Just as the Russian jet passes by, the video transmission stops. There’s no damage to the drone’s propeller, and the Russian jet starts circling it again seconds later. As it passes by, it releases fuel over it again. After the second maneuver, one of the propellers was damaged.

Before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on the MQ-9 and flew in front of it recklessly, environmentally unsoundly, and unprofessionally.
The Pentagon said the drone was on a routine ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) mission when it crashed. “As a result of a sharp manoeuvre… the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle entered an uncontrolled flight with loss of altitude and collided with the surface of the water,” says the Russian Defence Ministry, adding that neither Russian jet was in contact with the US plane or used weapons.
