It is alleged that the man lured the child to his poultry farm with the promise of chocolates and then raped her. After he was caught and brought before the village council, or panchayat, the elders decided not to turn him in. They found the man not guilty of rape. They only punished him for taking the girl to a secluded area.
The video of the punishment has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling it proof of patriarchy and skewed justice in rural India.
Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav were asked whether the state government would allow the crime to remain unpunished after users flagged the video.
According to Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangla, an FIR has been registered and action will be taken against the suspects. According to him, the police are also investigating those who attempted to suppress the incident.
