Officials said there was a brief power outage due to the missile strike. He also said that windows in buildings in the area of the nuclear plant were damaged.

Ukraine’s state nuclear enterprise, Energoatom, also reported the explosion, saying the explosion occurred early Monday morning at the plant’s industrial site, Newsweek reported.

He said that even though the explosion occurred less than 1,000 feet from its reactors, all three reactors continued to operate normally and no plant workers were injured. Energoatom said the explosion shattered more than 100 windows on the nuclear plant’s buildings, while one of its hydroelectric units and three power lines were torn down.

“Acts of nuclear terrorism committed by the Russian military threaten the whole world. They must be stopped immediately to prevent a new disaster!” read the statement.

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also shared video of the explosion on Telegram and condemned the strike. “The invaders wanted to shoot again, but they forgot what a nuclear power plant is,” he said, adding that “Russia puts the whole world at risk. We have to stop it before it’s too late”.

The strike near the South Ukraine plant, which is Ukraine’s second largest functioning nuclear station, follows months of concern at the larger Zaporizhzhya plant in the east. Both Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly accused each other of shelling near the Zaporizhzhya facility which is currently controlled by Russia but operated by Ukrainians.
