Gujarat Poll Dates Announced: After the Gujarat Election Commission announced the election schedule — voting on December 1 and a result on December 8 — AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal immediately declared his party would “definitely win”, followed by a one-minute Gujarati “message of love”.
Later, it was backed up by a claim that carried huge numbers.
“I am your brother, part of your family. If you give me a chance, I’ll give you free electricity, build hospitals and schools… and take you to Ayodhya’s Ram Temple,” said the Delhi Chief Minister, whose party hopes to make a dent in Narendra Modi’s home state, a BJP stronghold for over two decades.
AAP also criticized the BJP’s alleged “huge corruption” in Morbi, where a bridge collapse on October 30 killed more than 130 people.
According to AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj, if the pace continues, the party will win 140 to 150 seats (out of 182).
In contrast to 2017, when the party contested around 30 seats without making an impact, it fields candidates in all 182 constituencies this year.
The Congress is the main opposition party in the Gujarat assembly, but the AAP claims it’s not participating. Mr Kejriwal has said, “The Congress is finished. What’s the point of even talking about it?” According to the party spokesperson, “Congress and BJP play friendly games.”
In addition, Mr. Bharadwaj, MLA in Delhi, claimed, “This election is about free-of-charge and world-class education – the kind we have provided in Delhi – and about world-class mohalla clinics.”
Mr Kejriwal has made several tours to Gujarat over the past few months along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, showcasing what the AAP calls the “Delhi model of development”, while also bringing Hindu gods’ images onto banknotes to appeal to the BJP’s core Hindutva voter base.
As the AAP’s claims are “just its usual big talk,” the Congress says the election is not even a three-way race.
Both the BJP and the AAP consider the AAP a non-starter in Gujarat.
