Vani Jairam, who sang over 10,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Marathi, died today at her apartment in Chennai.
She was found dead in her apartment near Haddows Road in Chennai. Padma Bhushan is India’s third-highest civilian award.
The singer’s maid showed up for work today, but she didn’t get any response despite repeated calls. Her relatives told the police after she alerted them.
When the cops broke open the door, they found her dead. The husband of Vani Jairam died a few years ago, so she used to live alone.
People close to her say she fell after slipping.
After five decades in the film industry, she won thrice the National Best Playback Singer award, as well as state awards in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha.
Several musicians worked with the national award-winning singer.
