Vagir, the fifth Scorpene-class submarine, will be commissioned on January 23. It was built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai as part of Project-75 for the Indian Navy.

In July 2009, the construction of the submarine with “superior stealth features” like advanced acoustic absorption technique began. From 1973 to 2001, INS Vagir served in the Navy as a Vela-class submarine.
Vagir made its maiden sea sortie in February last year, starting sea trials. Comprehensive acceptance checks and demanding sea trials have been done on it.
The submarine, also known as Sand Shark, was delivered to the Indian Navy last December. Government release says it represents ‘Stealth and Fearlessness,’ two qualities synonymous with a submariner’s ethos.
As part of Project-75, six Kalvari-class submarines are being built in India by French company DCNS. Their missions include anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.
In an interview with PTI, a Navy official said Vagir will boost India’s maritime interests and can handle diverse missions.
