In January, US Man Joseph Lee Smith from Shreveport was convicted of killing Mya Patel.

Local media reports say a 35-year-old man was sentenced to 100 years for killing a 5-year-old Indian-origin girl in Louisiana in 2021.

KSLA News 12 and the Shreveport Times reported that Joseph Lee Smith from Shreveport was sentenced for killing Mya Patel.

A bullet struck Mya Patel in the head while she was playing in a hotel room on Monkhouse Drive. On March 23, 2021, she was pronounced dead after battling for three days in a nearby hospital.

A man got into an altercation with Smith in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel during Smith’s trial.

There was a hotel owned and operated by Vimal and Snehal Patel, who lived with Mya and a younger sibling on the ground floor.

Smith shot the other man with a 9-mm handgun during the altercation. After missing the other man, the bullet went into the hotel room and struck Patel in the head.

According to reports, District Judge John D Mosely sentenced Smith to 60 years at hard labor in connection with the March 2021 killing of Mya Patel.

For separate convictions connected to Patel’s killing, Smith must also serve 20 years for obstruction of justice and 20 years for aggravated battery. These terms must also be served without probation, parole, or a reduction in sentence, the reports said.

According to the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office, Smith’s terms were enhanced because he’s a repeat felony offender and must serve 100 years consecutively.
