US Flights Grounded: News reports said Wednesday that flights across the country were disrupted by a computer glitch.
Following the incident, all flights in the US were grounded, NBC News reported. As of 7 a.m. US Eastern Time, about 2,500 flights were delayed within, into, or out of the U.S. Another 100 flights were canceled.
It’s working to restore a system that alerts pilots to hazards and changes to airport facilities and procedures that had stopped processing updated information. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has asked airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9am Eastern Time.
A civil aviation regulator said its NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system failed. The website didn’t have an estimate for when it would be back, though NOTAMs from before the outage still worked.
From Hawaii to Washington, passengers reported flight delays and outages on social media. The Washington Post reports flights were impacted from Texas to Pennsylvania.
Aviation expert Parvez Damania called it “shocking and unheard of”. Over the phone, he told NDTV, “I can’t recall the last time the entire country’s airspace was closed. Maybe during 9/11. This is going to cause unbelievable disruption.”
