According to the American intelligence community, tensions are rising between India and Pakistan and between India and China, and there’s a possibility of a conflict.
According to the report, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to Pakistan’s “perceived or real” provocations.
In a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence presented an annual threat assessment of the US intelligence community to Congress.
The report said that even though India and China have had bilateral border talks and resolved border points, their relations will remain strained.
As both India and China expand their military postures along the disputed border, there’s an increased risk of armed confrontation that could threaten US people and interests and call for US intervention. A persistent low-level friction on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has the potential to escalate quickly, it said.
Since the eastern Ladakh military standoff in May 2020, relations between China and India have frozen.
There hasn’t been peace along the border, so India’s ties with China can’t be normal.
India and Pakistan’s crises are of particular concern because of the risk of an escalatory cycle between two nuclear-armed countries. After both sides renewed their ceasefire along the Line of Control in early 2021, New Delhi and Islamabad probably want to keep things calm.
There’s no doubt Pakistan has a long history of supporting anti-India militant groups, and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely to respond to Pakistani provocations with military force than ever before. “Conflict is more likely to happen if each side perceives heightened tensions, like violent unrest in Kashmir or a militant attack in India.”
Kashmir and cross-border terrorism from Pakistan have strained relations between India and Pakistan.
Terrorism and talks can’t go together, so Islamabad should make it easier for talks to resume.
Pakistan and the US are having a counterterrorism dialogue.
Among the topics discussed were counterterrorism cooperation at multilateral forums, assessing the regional counterterrorism landscape, cyber security, and fighting violent extremism.
During the dialogue, both sides shared their experiences fighting terrorism financing. In all its forms and manifestations, terrorism is a common threat.
The State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said US-Pakistan counter-terrorism dialogue gives the United States the chance to convey its willingness to work with Pakistan to address terrorist threats and counter violent extremism, threats both in the region and threats that could go beyond the region.
Mr Price said the two of us are interested in fighting regional security threats.
A stable and secure South and Central Asia free of terrorism depends mostly on our partnership with Pakistan. We can talk about steps we can take together to counter all terrorist groups that threaten regional and global stability, he said. The dialogue is a testament to our shared commitment to a resilient security relationship.”
The question was whether the US takes up with Islamabad the issue of Lashkar-e-Taiba, active in Kashmir, and Khalistani terrorist groups receiving support from the Pakistani army and ISI.
Any group that threatens regional or global stability is a concern to us. It’s something we discussed in this counter-terrorism dialogue,” Mr Price said.
