A portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Begusarai district on Sunday, but no one was injured.
Located near Sahebpur Kamal, the 206-meter-long bridge over the Burhi Gandak river is being built by Ma Bhagwati Construction, Begusarai, under the state government’s road construction department (RCD).
According to reports, cracks appeared in pillar numbers 2 and 3 on Thursday, preventing vehicles from moving.
The bridge links three panchayats with a combined population of around 20,000 to NH-31, officials said, adding the inauguration was scheduled after the metaled approach road was constructed.
It would have been more dangerous if traffic had not been strictly prohibited, according to locals.
After cracks developed in pillars, traffic was prohibited.
Rohit Kumar, the Ballia sub-divisional officer (SDO), said investigations were underway.
As the approach road was incomplete and traffic had been strictly prohibited since Thursday after cracks were seen in pillars, the bridge was not officially inaugurated.
As reported, the concrete bridge was started in 2016 and started functioning without being inaugurated in 2017. Villagers crossed the bridge without any ceremony and light vehicles used it.
According to a local public representative, “we raised our voices against the substandard materials being used in the construction, but no one listened.”. This is a serious matter of concern. The matter needs to be investigated at a high level.”
An engineer with RCD declared the incident a major accident without disclosing his identity.
According to him, cave-ins of under-construction bridges are a major technical blunder.
