During the solemn religious confirmation of his accession, the 2,300-strong Westminster Abbey congregation cried “God Save the King” and trumpet fanfares resounded.
Church bells rang in celebration across the country as gun salutes echoed across land and sea.
While many of the intricate rituals and ceremonies that recognized Charles as his people’s “undoubted king” continued, the king modernized other aspects of the service.
For the first time, women bishops were present, as were leaders of non-Christian faiths, while Celtic languages — Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, and Irish Gaelic — were prominently featured.
In tribute to Charles’s late father, Prince Philip, who was born on Corfu, a gospel choir sang for the first time at a coronation.
Charles is supreme governor of the Church of England and has described himself as an “Anglican Christian”. As a result, his country is more religiously and ethnically diverse than the one his mother inherited after World War II.
Hence, he invited ordinary members of the public to sit alongside heads of state and global royalty to make the congregation more representative of British society.
Another change reflected his lifelong interest in biodiversity and sustainability. The ceremonial vestments from previous coronations were reused, and the anointing oil used was vegan.
In a reading from the Bible at the service, Britain’s first black prime minister Rishi Sunak called the coronation “a proud expression of our history, culture, and tradition”.
The police arrested dozens of anti-monarchy protesters earlier this week as they prepared to protest along a coronation procession route.
