The Trinamool Congress, which rules Bengal, has taken a significant lead over its closest competitor, the BJP, in local body elections that are being viewed as a test for next year’s general elections. Celebrations have begun at Trinamool offices throughout the state with green gulal and boxes of sweets, despite the fact that vote counting is still a long way off.
The ballots for the three-tier panchayat polls, which includes 74,000 seats, including 63,229 gram panchayat seats, 9,730 panchayat samiti seats, and 928 zilla parishad seats, began this morning. According to data released by the state Election Commission, Trinamool is leading in 23,198 gram panchayat seats, while the BJP is ahead in 5,756 seats.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is leading in 2,048 seats, and the Congress is leading in 1,439 seats. Other parties, including the newly formed ISF, are leading in 1,721 seats, while independents, including Trinamool rebels, won 718 seats and led in 216 seats.
On Monday, there were reports of violence in several polling booths, which resulted in 15 deaths. There were allegations of ballot box tampering during the repolling on 696 booths held yesterday. This morning, crude bombs exploded near a counting centre in Murshidabad, and the police resorted to lathicharge in Howrah to control crowds.
Despite this, the counting is being conducted with tight security. Armed state police personnel and central forces are stationed at the counting centres, and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC are being enforced outside the venue to prevent any untoward incidents.
According to BJP, Trinamool is making desperate efforts to steal votes by preventing opposition agents from entering counting centers. Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition, stated that TMC goons are not letting BJP and other opposition party agents and candidates enter counting centers.
He further added that bombs are being thrown to intimidate the counting agents. However, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh denied these claims and said that BJP is making baseless allegations due to their own organizational failures.
The Trinamool party has also claimed that 60% of the people killed in the violence were their supporters. The violence began when the Panchayat polls were announced, and the Bengal Governor has submitted a report on this matter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. To address people’s complaints, the Governor has also opened a “Peace Home” at his official residence, which is a first for the Raj Bhavan.
