Train passengers will be able to order food via a WhatsApp number, with an AI-enabled chatbot taking care of their e-catering and meal booking questions.

“WhatsApp communication for e-catering services has been implemented on selected trains and passengers. We will enable the same on other trains based on customer feedback,” the Railways said.

IRCTC has started e-catering services through its website www.catering.irctc.co.in and its app ‘Food on Track’.

Two phases were planned for the implementation of e-catering through WhatsApp.

In the first phase, a WhatsApp number sends a message to customers booking e-tickets inviting them to opt in for e-catering by clicking on www.ecatering.irctc.co.in.

Then they can book meals directly through the e-catering website of IRCTC without even downloading an app from the restaurants of their choice at stations enroute.

The WhatsApp number becomes an interactive two-way communication platform where an AI-powered chatbot handles all passenger questions about e-catering services and books meals.

With IRCTC’s e-catering services, approximately 50,000 meals are served to customers every day.
