The two-day meeting includes Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal, Hemant Soren, and RJD chief Lalu Prasad.

Opposition leaders have met in Bengaluru to decide how the Opposition will take on the BJP next year. Today, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be formal talks.

In the evening, the leaders met for dinner in Bengaluru to formalize the agenda for Tuesday’s closed-door talks. Sources say there’s a chance that Sonia Gandhi will be named the Front’s President, while Nitish Kumar will take on the role of Convenor.  

The two-day meeting is also attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and chief ministers MK Stalin, Nitish Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal, Hemant Soren, Mamata Banerjee, and Lalu Prasad. The meeting tomorrow will be attended by Sharad Pawar, whose party split earlier this month following the rebellion of his nephew Ajit Pawar.

The front’s name should have the word “India” in it, according to sources. “United we stand” will be the tagline. A Common Minimum Programme has also been sought. Separating the subject of states was also suggested.

“Like-minded opposition parties will work together to promote social justice, inclusive development, and national prosperity. “United we stand for this INDIA,” said Mallikarjun Kharge. “We want the people of India freed from autocratic and anti-people politics of hate, division, economic inequality and loot.”

Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee were seated next to each other at the Taj West End Hotel this evening. The meeting was delayed by almost 20 minutes due to a one-on-one conversation earlier, sources said.

There is a good rapport between the two leaders, but the relationship between the Congress and Ms Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has soured recently. As a result, both parties now agree that defeating the BJP next year is a top priority if democracy and federalism are to be saved.

A carefully chosen place has been chosen by the Congress for the meet. In the recent Karnataka assembly election, the Congress party not only strengthened its position, but also galvanised the opposition.

Despite this, the Congress has maintained a low profile under Mallikarjun Kharge, reiterating its desire to hear from other leaders. It has also shown its willingness to work together by supporting Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party in its fight against the Central Ordinance in parliament.

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said that all parties willing to fight the BJP are welcome, including Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal Secular. The opposition will grow from 16 in Patna to 26 in Bengaluru. There will be more meetings. Issues will be discussed now, and leaders will be discussed later.

BJP constituents will also meet tomorrow in Delhi as part of a show of strength by the party. This meeting is being held because the BJP is experiencing “jitters”.
