Shocking scenes unfolded on the streets of Hyderabad today when a crane brought by the police pulled away the car of YS Sharmila, Telangana politician and sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, while she was sitting inside.
Ms Sharmila’s YSR Telangana party has launched a padyatra against the K Chandrasekhar Rao government, and she was briefly detained yesterday after clashes broke out between supporters and workers of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Warangal. Ms Sharmila’s padyatra, which has covered a distance of around 3,500 km so far, has targeted the KCR-led government alleging large-scale corruption.
This morning, she attended the party’s protest rally at Pragati Bhavan, the official residence of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. Soon after he got into his car, police arrived with a crane that towed the vehicle through city streets.
Visuals showed YS Sharmila sitting in the car as a crane pulled it away and her supporters and media persons ran alongside. Cracks in the windshield of the vehicle damaged in yesterday’s clash are also visible in the pictures.
Speaking at Narasampet in Warangal yesterday, Ms. Sharmila criticized local TRS MLA Peddi Sudarshan Reddy.
His comments reportedly enraged party workers led by KCR, and they attacked his vehicle, prompting his supporters to retaliate.
“Why are you arresting me? I am the victim, not the accused here,” Ms Sharmila was heard shouting yesterday as she and her supporters were being taken away by the police.
Following the clash, the state police temporarily revoked the permission for the padyatra and sent Sharmila to Hyderabad under police protection. A senior official denied reports that he was arrested.
“For the past 223 days, I and my party leaders and representatives have been undertaking peaceful padyatras to highlight the plight of various sections of people in Telangana.” Any cost,” Ms Sharmila had said yesterday.
Today’s police action against the Telangana politician comes after the state police denied permission for a padayatra by state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar. The police said it denied permission for the march as it passes through a communally sensitive area.
Mr Sanjay then moved the Telangana High Court, which allowed the padyatra with the rider not to enter a specific area marked by the state police.
