Probably the best T20 batter in the world at the moment, Suryakumar Yadav smashed 111 runs against New Zealand in Sunday’s second T20I of the 3-match series.

In just 49 balls, Suryakumar reached the 3-digit figure. For his heroics, the batter was deservedly named Player of the Match. In the process, he also achieved a unique feat in the shortest format of the game, surpassing Virat Kohli.

Suryakumar won the Player of the Match award for India for the 7th time in the history of T20 cricket. Surya now has 6 Player of the Match awards in a single calendar year, surpassing Kohli’s total of 6.

Only Sikandar Raza has won more Player of the Match awards in international cricket than Suryakumar Yadav (7) in a calendar year. On Tuesday, Surya will have the chance to surpass Raza’s tally in the third and final T20I.

Surya said the plan for him and the team was to take the match deep during the match.

I had a clear plan when I went to bat. Around 170-175 was a par score in the 12th or 13th over when we decided to bat deep. It’s all about having fun and having an intent (behind his freak shots).

It is also important to practice. Having a full game and going 1-0 in the series is a great feeling. I didn’t think too much about what was going on. It worked out well for me. The crowd here is fantastic,” he said during the post-match presentation.
