On Friday, Chief Justice of India DY Chadrachud administered the oath of office to Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, the chief justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and senior lawyer Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan.

During the summer vacation itself, three judges — Justice KM Joseph, Justice Ajay Rastogi, and Justice V Ramasubramanian — are demitting office, restoring the Supreme Court’s full strength of 34 judges.
Due to the retirement of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice MR Shah, the Supreme Court now has 32 judges as opposed to the sanctioned 34.
Judges Mishra and Viswanathan were appointed to the top court on Thursday by President Droupadi Murmu’s office, and the appointments were announced on Twitter by new Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
After Justice JB Pardiwala retires on August 11, 2030, Justice Viswanathan will become the Chief Justice of India and serve until May 25, 2031.
On the Supreme Court’s website, the swearing-in ceremony was streamed live.
On May 16, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their appointment.
A collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices SK Kaul, KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna recommended the appointment of only one bar member directly to the Supreme Court bench.
In their considered opinion, Mr KV Viswanathan, Senior Advocate, is an excellent candidate for appointment as a Supreme Court Judge.
