Supreme Court Frees 3 Rapist: Today, the Supreme Court freed three men convicted of raping and torturing a 19-year-old Delhi woman before killing her in 2012, months before the Nirbhaya case. They were described as predators scouting the streets for prey by the Delhi High Court.
Days after she had been kidnapped, the young woman’s burned and mutilated body was found in a field in Haryana’s Rewari district. It appeared that she had been hit with car tools and earthen pots due to the severity of her wounds.
Delhi’s Najafgarh police station registered a case. According to the complaint, the teen was kidnapped, raped, and murdered, and his body was dumped in a field in Rewari.
A Delhi court convicted Ravi Kumar, Rahul, and Vinod in February 2014 on charges of kidnapping, rape, and murder. They were sentenced to death by the court.
The Delhi High Court backed the death penalty the same year, saying the convicts were “predators” looking for victims on the streets.
In the Supreme Court, the three requested that their sentences be reduced based on the High Court ruling. All three were freed by a bench of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi.
The Delhi Police had opposed reducing the death sentence in the Supreme Court. According to them, the crime was not committed only against the victim, but also against society as a whole. As a result, the police argued that no concessions should be made to the convicts given the heinous nature of the crime.
Defence counsel argued for a reduction in sentence on behalf of the convicts, citing their age, family background, and criminal history.
The girl’s parents said they were “broken” by the Supreme Court verdict, but asserted that they would continue their legal fight. This is a blind justice system. We came here for justice.”
They also alleged that the convicts threatened them inside the courtroom during their 12-year struggle for justice.
10. Months after this incident, a 23-year-old woman was gangraped, tortured and killed on a moving bus in Delhi, sparked massive protests and led to tougher laws on sexual assault.
