IND vs SA Dinesh Karthik: When Wayne Parnell bowled Hardik Pandya, India was down to 90 for 4 in the 13th over of the second T20I against South Africa in Cuttack. Dinesh Karthik was supposed to bat at No. 6, but India chose to send in Axar Patel instead. Patel could only score 10 runs off of 11 balls, but Karthik, who came in at No. 7 with five overs left, overcame a slow start to score 30 runs off of 21 balls. India, on the other hand, could only score 148 for 6 and lost by four wickets.

Shreyas Iyer said after the game that India would continue to save Karthik for the last few overs. However, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith criticized this decision during the post-game broadcast analysis. “This is definitely something we’ve thought about before. We still had seven overs to go, and Axar Patel is someone who can take singles and keep switching the strike,” Iyer said in a press conference after the game.

According to Shreyas Iyer:

IND vs SA Dinesh Karthik: Shreyas Iyer of India hits a ball during the second Twenty20 match between India and South Africa on June 12, 2022, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

“At that point, we didn’t need someone to come in and start hitting from ball one. Even DK can do that, but DK has been a great help to us after 15 overs, when he can come in and slog the ball right away,” Iyer said. “Even he had trouble getting off to a good start. The wicket was a big part of the game, but we’ll use the same strategy in our next games as well.

Wayne Parnell of South Africa cheers when Hardik Pandya of India gets out during the second Twenty20 International (T20I) between India and South Africa on June 12, 2022, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

Karthik had a hard time, just like the batters who came before him, on a pitch with two speeds and different bounce. In the balls 19th over, he only had 8 runs off of 15. Then, in the last over, he hit two fours off of Anrich Nortje and two sixes off of Dwaine Pretorius.

“From one end, the ball stayed low, and from the other end”, Iyer said:

Iyer thought that 160 could have been a good score. He said that conditions were hard for batting and that he hadn’t been able to figure out how the pitch was acting, even though he faced 35 balls in the middle for his 40. Iyer said, “I did everything I could, but it was really hard for the new batsman to come in and get going.” “From one end, the ball stayed low, and from the other end, it bounced in different ways and seaming.”
