Shaheen Afridi Injury: Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been advised two weeks of rehabilitation after injuring his knee during the T20 World Cup final against England in Melbourne. The 22-year-old was forced to leave the field after he injured his right knee again while taking a catch from England batsman Harry Brooke in the 13th over of England’s chase.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement, “Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was found to have made an awkward landing while taking a catch of Harry Brooke during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 final in Melbourne on Sunday for two weeks. Rehabilitation has been advised.”

“Scans performed on Monday morning before the team’s departure for Pakistan confirmed that there were no signs of injury and that the knee discomfort was ‘due to forced knee flexion during landing’.” Afridi had earlier injured his right knee during a Test match against Sri Lanka in July, but he managed to find a place in the squad for the T20 showpiece.

On Sunday, Afridi returned to the field and tried to bowl the 16th over, but could not complete it.

“The scans were discussed between the PCB’s chief medical officer, Dr Najibullah Soumro, and Australian knee specialist Dr Peter D’Alessandro, and was reassured to find that there were no injuries. The left-arm pacer is feeling better and in it’s a cheerful mood.

“Shaheen will undergo a rehabilitation and conditioning program designed to strengthen his knee at the National High Performance Center a few days after his return to Pakistan.” Afridi, who took 11 wickets in seven matches during the T20 World Cup, is likely to be ruled out of the home Test series against England and New Zealand in December-January.

The PCB said, “Shaheen’s return to international cricket will be after the champion fast bowler has successfully completed the rehabilitation program and approved by the medical staff.”

Afridi’s injury was a crucial moment in the final as Iftikhar Ahmed, who completed his over, hit a four and a six as England chased down the target with six balls to spare.
