The Kalamassery area of Kerala’s Ernakulam was rocked by multiple blasts this morning, killing one person and injuring several others. The incident has injured over 35 people, according to reports. The explosions occurred during christen prayers at the convention center today, which was Sunday.

The three-day meeting concluded on Sunday, after starting on October 27. While Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has condemned the blasts assuring of proper investigation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to the CM and took stock of the situation. In crowded areas throughout the state, the Kerala police have also tightened security.

At the moment, one person has died and others are hospitalized. “I will talk later after I get more information,” CM Vijayan said.

A Jehovah’s Witness convention was taking place in Kalamassery, about 10 kilometres from Kochi, when the incident occurred. Nearly 2,000 people attended the prayer meeting.

In the middle of a prayer, the first blast occurred, according to those present in the convention center.

“There were two more blasts after that,” an old lady inside the center reported.

Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala’s chief minister, called the blasts ‘unfortunate’ and said the situation is being closely monitored. A team of senior police officials is en route to the blast site in the state.

Following the blast, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed all healthcare workers to report to work.

The National Investigation Agency will now investigate the cause of the blast, which is not yet known. As of now, the agency’s forensic team is collecting evidence at the scene.

People were evacuated from the cordoned-off site in large numbers by fire rescue and police personnel after the incident.

Multiple fires were seen inside the convention center as people and children screamed in fear as disturbing videos were captured.

As the hall was littered with scattered and damaged chairs, some people also attempted to quell the fires.

The convention center was surrounded by hundreds of people after the explosion.
