Two buses collided in central Senegal, killing 40 and injuring dozens.
It looks like one of the buses had a burst tyre and collided head-on with an oncoming bus, officials said.
Macky Sall has declared three days of mourning and promised to improve road safety.
Senegal has a lot of traffic accidents, but this was one of the deadliest.
Cheikh Fall, an emergency services official, told AFP that 87 people were injured in the collision.
The wounded have been taken to hospitals and medical centers for treatment.
Mr Sall confirmed the 40 deaths on Twitter, saying he was “deeply saddened”.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
In Kenya, 21 people died and 49 were injured in a bus accident.
When the bus crashed, it had just crossed the border into Kenya.
Ugandan regional police spokesman Rogers Taitika told AFP the driver appeared to have lost control.
Eight Ugandans were among those killed, he said.
