Satya Nadella announced today that former CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman will lead a new team for advanced research in Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft. Altman was fired days earlier from his co-founded company, OpenAI.

“We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, as well as the support we can provide our customers and partners,” Mr Nadella wrote on X when announcing Microsoft’s move. Getting to know Emmett Shear and working with OAI’s new leadership team will be an exciting experience.”

As Altman noted in his posting, “The mission continues,” Mr Nadella’s post was shared by him.
According to Brockman’s post on X, Altman, the creator of ChatGPT, was fired over a Google Meet call on Friday. In a separate Google Meet call, Brockman was informed that he was being removed from the board, but would retain his role.
Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist and co-founder, conveyed both decisions, Brockman wrote in his post.
The board’s actions today shocked and saddened Sam and me,” Brockman wrote Saturday. His resignation from the company was announced.
OpenAI said Altman’s departure followed a “deliberate review process by the board, which concluded he wasn’t consistently candid in his communications with the board, hampering its ability to function”. As a result, the board no longer believes that he can continue to lead OpenAI.
Tech industry leaders were shocked by the move. The US media reported shortly after that major OpenAI investors were interested in having Altman return.
