He was appointed at the BCCI AGM in Mumbai. Sourav Ganguly is replaced by Binny as India’s captain. The only candidate to file a nomination for the BCCI president’s position was Binny, 67.
As all of the new office-bearers will be elected unopposed, the election was merely a formality.
As of now, Binny will be leaving his position as President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. In 1983, he was one of the architects of India’s historic World Cup victory.
During that edition of the prestigious tournament, he took 18 wickets in eight games.
Binny served on the senior selection committee when Sandeep Patil was chairman. He recused himself whenever Stuart Binny’s name was discussed for selection in the Indian team.
Last week, Ganguly had a lot of meetings with stakeholders in New Delhi, according to a PTI report. It is not precedent for the BCCI president to serve a second term, according to the former India captain.
“Sourav declined the IPL chairmanship. He explained that he could not accept becoming head of a sub-committee within BCCI after heading the same organization. He had expressed interest in continuing to hold the position,” said a BCCI source.
Once Ganguly declined to take a call on the IPL chairmanship, the decision makers promoted Dhumal, who, along with secretary Shah, is recognized as one of the most efficient men in the last BCCI cabinet.
