As a result of Boris Johnson calling off his comeback bid and Penny Mordaunt not getting enough support, Rishi Sunak, 42, has been appointed Prime Minister by King Charles III.
As the first Hindu Prime Minister of Britain, the Indian-origin leader is the youngest to hold the post in 200 years.
After Liz Truss left office just 49 days into her term, Sunak became Britain’s third Prime Minister this year.
Truss wished Sunak “every success” and remained “more convinced than ever” that Britain needed to be “bold” in facing its challenges.
According to The Sun’s headline, “The force is with you, Rishi,” in reference to Mr Sunak’s love of “Star Wars” films. The Daily Mail called it “a new dawn for Britain.”
Conservative MPs must “unite or die,” according to Mr Sunak’s warning in the left-leaning Guardian.
After a disastrous tax-slashing budget sparked economic and political turmoil, Ms Truss left office as the shortest-serving premier in history.
As Britain faces decades-high inflation, surging borrowing costs, and an imminent recession, Mr. Sunak has vowed to work hard.
However, Gavin Williamson, who served in both Theresa May and Mr Johnson’s governments, said the party was in a “last chance saloon” on bringing the party together.
As soon as Mr Sunak faces his first session of “Prime Minister’s Questions” in parliament on Wednesday, he will begin appointing his top team.
As soon as the markets stabilize, Jeremy Hunt, the Finance Minister appointed by Ms Truss just 11 days ago to salvage her premiership, could remain in charge.
According to Mr Hunt, Mr Sunak is a leader who is “willing to make the choices that are necessary for our long-term prosperity”, as he wrote in the Telegraph on Sunday.
