As the Times of India reported, Mathura Police submitted a bizarre report to a special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (1985) court claiming rats had consumed 500 kilograms of marijuana seized and stored in warehouses at Shergarh and Highway Police stations. In response to a court order earlier this year, Mathura Police produced marijuana recovered under the NDPS Act.

According to the report, the additional district judge ordered Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav to remove the “mice menace” and provide evidence that the rodents consumed 581 kilograms of marijuana worth Rupees 60 lakh.

In addition, the court issued five-point directions regarding the auction and disposal of weed stored in police warehouses. According to TOI, acting senior superintendent of police (SSP), Mathura, Martand P Singh, said time-bound action would be taken in compliance with the court orders.

There have been reports of rats destroying 581 kilograms of weed stored in warehouses at Shergarh and Highway police stations. The cops have found it impossible to protect the substances stored there. According to the special public prosecutor Ranveer Singh, the court ordered the police to produce evidence regarding the claim and set November 26 as the next hearing date.

In its order dated November 18, the court referred to a case under Highway police station in which 195 kgs of recovered weed were destroyed by rats, according to government counsel to the court. Mathura police clarified that rats are small in size and do not fear police. SHOs are not experts in solving every problem.

Mathura police arrested three men smuggling weed in a truck in May 2020. A truck was intercepted near Jatwari village in the Shergarh area and 386 kg of weed hidden in millet bags was recovered. In accordance with the NDPS Act, the three accused were sent to judicial custody.
