According to Mr. Ali, after the confrontation in Parliament, unknown individuals sent him “threatening and menacing messages.” He attached screenshots of these messages.
Having been targeted by Ramesh Bidhuri’s Islamophobic rant in Parliament last week, Bhahujan Samaj Party MP Kunwar Danish Ali wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asking him to “break his silence” and take steps to “uphold and protect the parliamentary decorum”. Nishikant Dubey, another BJP MP, also claimed Mr Bidhuri used communal slurs because he (Mr Ali) used casteist terms against the Prime Minister. “I raised an objection to the use of inappropriate language to describe you (the PM),” said Ali.
In the House, no member of the ruling party objected to my stance against unparliamentary language being used against you. However, when I rose and pointed out Shri Bidhuri’s unparliamentary language towards you, he got rattled and reacted strongly, possibly realizing his mistake,” Danish Ali wrote.
Mr Ali told Prime Minister Modi, who has not addressed the row and whose party has not disciplined the member, that the world is watching India more closely. The use of unparliamentary and abusive language by Shri Ramesh Bidhuri Hon’ble MP is deeply concerning to you as Leader of the House and Prime Minister of our great nation.”
His three-page letter asked the PM for a statement “condemning such behavior” and reminding all members to maintain “highest standards of decorum and conduct”. We are viewed by the world as torchbearers of democracy, he wrote.
As well as holding Mr Bidhuri accountable for his “reprehensible conduct”, Mr Ali demanded that he be punished. Furthermore, the BSP lawmaker requested strengthened security measures due to a “barrage of threats”.
In response to allegations by Mr Dubey and another BJP MP, Ravi Kisan Shukla, Mr Ali had earlier expressed concern about a “story of (his) physical lynching” being created.
According to Mr Ali, he received “threatening and menacing messages” following the confrontation in Parliament, which he attached screenshots of.
Ramesh Bidhuri hasn’t commented on this row, except to leave its resolution to his party and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who has received complaints from opposition leaders. On repeating such behavior, Mr Birla had only warned of “strict action.”
Trade complaints filed by the BJP and opposition
Parliament’s Privileges Committee received complaints from both the BJP and the opposition on Thursday. After Mr Ali and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP Kanimozhi sent theirs, Mr Dubey and Mr Kisan sent theirs for the BJP.
As it emerged the BJP had sent Mr Bidhuri to Tonk district in Rajasthan to lead its election campaign, anger over Mr Bidhuri’s slurs escalated. The opposition slammed the BJP’s move as a reward for hatred and an attempt to remove Mr Bidhuri from the spotlight.
The BSP leader also said the attack had traumatized him and that his party would take action or promote him in light of the outburst. Speaking to NDTV after the incident, Mr Ali said the incident had “shamed the country.”
This week, the BJP MP met with party boss JP Nadda in Delhi. Two days later, he was reassigned to Rajasthan.
During a discussion about India’s Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission, Ramesh Bidhuri and Danish Ali faced off in Lok Sabha.
