With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting moderate to heavy rains over entire South Bengal in the next 72 hours, the goddess of rain may act as a spoiler during the remaining three days of the festivities.
The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate rains over most parts of South Bengal and one or two places in Purba and Paschim Medinipur, South and North 24 Parganas and Birbhum districts during this period.
An IMD spokesperson said, “A Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over Northeast Bay of Bengal and extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. This system is likely to remain active for the next three days with intermittent rain over South Bengal.
However, to some relief for the residents of Kolkata and its adjoining areas, the IMD said that the weather in the city will be generally cloudy with light to moderate rains.
Kolkata recorded 31 mm of rain on Saturday, with some areas receiving rain and other parts remaining dry. Areas of north and central Kolkata received rain, while the south received less rainfall.
The figures of rain on Sunday were being compared.
Kashi Bose Lane Puja Samiti spokesperson Soumen Dutta said, “Despite the rain, people are coming to us. We will pray to Mother Goddess so that the situation does not worsen.”
