Using Dream11, a popular online fantasy gaming platform, he won 1.5 crore. Sub Inspector Somnath Zende of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate had begun receiving money into his account. It was a short-lived joy, however.

There will now be an investigation into the cop’s actions. Was it possible for him to participate in such a game while working as a police officer?

Mr Zende said he expected to get no money after making a profit of 1.5 crore but yesterday he got one lakh forty thousand rupees from a transaction of 2 lakh.

Despite claiming that he will use the money to pay off his home loan, the cop insists that he will use it to pay off the loan. The remaining half of the money will be invested in fixed deposits and the interest will be used to pay for the education of his children.

Is it legal to participate in such online games while working for a police department? Does this follow the rules? Is it legal to discuss the money received in this manner in the media? Is that all within the rules? The investigation will be conducted. Satish Maane, ACP, Pimpri Chinchwad, said the investigation was given to DCP Swapna Gore and that action will be taken after a report has been submitted.

The Dream11 gaming platform, which offers fantasy sports games, is India’s first gaming company to reach a valuation of over $1 billion (roughly Rs 7,535 crore). Due to the similarities between fantasy gaming and gambling, it has faced legal challenges in the past.

According to the company, which was founded in 2008 and now has more than 110 million users, its bets do not constitute gambling.

“Fantasy leagues have been recognized by our courts and are subject to GST and tax. Hence, there can be no doubt about their legality,” said Supreme Court lawyer Himanshu Shekhar.

The Supreme Court rejected three to four such cases that originated in different High Courts. The Supreme Cort lawyer continued, “Fantasy games are skill games, and skill games are legal in our country. There is no restriction in this regard,” he said.

Until the investigation is completed, the cop will have to wait and watch.
