Footballer Priya: Protests have erupted in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu following the alleged death of a teenage footballer due to knee surgery.
Priya, 17, died on Tuesday, days after undergoing surgery for a torn ligament in her right knee.
Officials say she died of multi-organ failure resulting from complications following surgery.
After an inquiry, the two doctors who performed the surgery were found guilty of medical negligence.
According to a Times of India newspaper report, the police have registered a case of “unnatural death” in connection with the incident.
Priya’s family has demanded that the doctors be arrested.
Her brother Lawrence told The Times of India that Priya, a state-level soccer player, had complained of pain in her legs after a surgery at Periyar Nagar Hospital in Chennai city on November 7.
BBC Tamil learned that doctors put a tourniquet – a tight compression bandage – on her leg and prescribed pain medication.
But a day later his condition worsened and he was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, a major government hospital in the city.
The hospital ran tests and found that the tissue in his limbs was dead, and his leg would need to be amputated.
His condition worsened after the amputation. She underwent another surgery on 14 November and died of organ failure a day later.
The death of the teenager has sparked outrage in Tamil Nadu, prompting the state government to order an inquiry.
State Health Minister Ma Subramaniam called Priya’s death an “irreparable loss” and said the two doctors who operated on her for the first time had been found guilty of negligence.
“The surgery went well, but the compression bandage was so tight that it cut off blood circulation,” he told reporters.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced monetary compensation for Priya’s family and a government job for one of her family members.
