President Of Bharat: Foreign leaders attending the weekend G20 summit were invited for the first time as “President of Bharat” instead of the traditional “President of India”. Among others, US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are among those attending the mega event, which marks a significant change in nomenclature on the international stage.
In her invitation to foreign leaders and chief ministers for a dinner on September 9, President Droupadi Murmu refers to herself as “President of Bharat”.
There has never been a change to India’s official event nomenclature before.
There is also a reference to “Bharat” in the Constitution, officials note. Article 1 of the Constitution states that India, or Bharat, shall be a Union of States.
As part of India’s G20 presidency, a booklet titled “Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy” was handed out to foreign delegates to highlight the country’s rich democratic ethos.
The booklet begins with the words, “In Bharat, that is India, taking consent of the people in governance has been an integral part of life since ancient times.” The booklet continues: “Bharat is the country’s official name. It appears in the Constitution and in 1946-48 discussions.”
Among the first to cheer the change was Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. His post on X, formerly Twitter, read: “REPUBLIC OF BHARAT – proud and happy that our civilisation is marching boldly toward AMRIT KAAL.”
The move has been long overdue, according to Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. We are proud of ‘Bharat’. The President has given priority to ‘Bharat’. This is the biggest statement to come out of colonial thinking.” he said.
He also tweeted:
While BJP leaders welcomed the move, the opposition strongly responded, linking the presidential invitation to the name of their front to challenge the BJP in 2024 – INDIA.
BJP has started sending invitations with ‘Republic of Bharat’ instead of ‘Republic of India’ since we renamed our alliance INDIA a few weeks ago, said RJD leader Manoj Jha. Our Constitution states that India is Bharat. Neither you nor you’ll be able to take Bharat from us.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), asked, “Will BJP replace ‘Bharat’ with something else if INDIA alliance changes its name to Bharat?”
BJP leaders were also targeted by Congress leaders.
According to BJP president JP Nadda, the Congress is anti-national and anti-constitutional.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the ruling party, had suggested two days ago that the country should be called Bharat instead of India.
The name India should be stopped and replaced with Bharat. Occasionally, we use it to make those who speak English understand. But we must stop using it…The name of the country is Bharat, no matter where you are in the world. In spoken and written form, one must use the name Bharat,” said RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
With the opposition alliance adopting the acronym INDIA in July, politics over India versus Bharat has spiraled out of control.
Rahul Gandhi said at the press conference where the name was announced, “The fight is between the NDA and INDIA. It’s a battle between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and INDIA.
The name sparked a huge backlash from the ruling BJP, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the opposition of whitewashing their “sins.” “They are not showing patriotism by changing their name to INDIA because they are planning to steal the country,” he claimed.
The “Bharat” move drew reactions from more than just politicians.
In his tweet, Amitabh Bachchan kept it short. The megastar wrote “Bharat Mata ki Jai.”.
