PM Modi Visits Morbi Tragedy Site: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reached Morbi in Gujarat where a century-old bridge collapsed on Sunday, killing 145+ people. At the accident site, the Prime Minister was briefed about the search and rescue operations.
Soon after PM Modi Visits Morbi Tragedy Site, the Prime Minister reached Morbi’s Civil Hospital where the injured are being treated. The Prime Minister was seen asking the victims about their health.
The IndiNews team visited the hospital last night and found that a major “makeover” was going on after midnight before the visit.
The renovation, which is not uncommon, has attracted criticism ahead of visits by top government officials. The opposition Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have accused the BJP of engaging in “event management” to ensure “photoshoots” for the prime minister.
The British-era suspension bridge in Morbi, which had been closed for renovations since March, collapsed on Sunday night – just four days after it was reopened to the public. At least 47 children, several women and the elderly were among the dead, according to officials.
Documents show that the bridge was opened to the public five months ahead of time. The Oreva Group, the renovation company of the bridge, did not obtain the fitness certificate from the civic authorities before opening the bridge, Morbi municipal agency head Sandeepsinh Jala confirmed to IndiNews on Sunday.
The company was bound by its contract to keep the bridge closed for at least eight to 12 months for maintenance and repair. Police said in an FIR that opening the bridge last week was a “grossly irresponsible and reckless gesture”.
Tickets were sold for ₹12 to ₹17 for more than 400 people on Sunday, resulting in overcrowding at the “hanging bridge”, giving way to old metal wires, officials said. Sources said that Gujarat’s forensic laboratory has also found that the bridge collapsed due to the huge crowd.
Sources said some old cables of the bridge at Morbi were not replaced during the seven-month renovation by the Orewa Group. So far nine people have been arrested in this case. These include Orewa’s manager, ticket collector, bridge repair contractor and three security guards whose job was to control the crowd.
A PIL or PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a judicial inquiry into the Morbi bridge collapse. The PIL has also sought a direction to the states to conduct a survey of all “old and risky” structures. The Supreme Court will hear this petition on November 14.
People fell on top of each other as the bridge collapsed. Videos showed several people clinging to the remains of the bridge, while some were seen swimming safely. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday announced a state-wide mourning for the victims of the bridge collapse.
