Before watching a cricket match together in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian PM Anthony Albanese took a lap of honour at a stadium. Before the fourth Test match between India and Australia, the two Prime Ministers rode a golf cart around the Narendra Modi stadium waving at the crowd.
Australia and India compete on the field to be the best. Off the field, we’re working together to make the world a better place.
Both PM Modi and Mr Albanese shook hands with their respective team captains, Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith. In addition, they met players from both sides and sang the national anthems with them.
The BCCI also presented framed artwork to the two leaders to celebrate 75 years of friendship through cricket.
As part of a state visit to India, the Australian PM is in Ahmedabad.
The Australian Prime Minister tweeted shortly after his arrival, “An incredible welcome to Ahmedabad, India. The beginning of an important trip for Australia-India relations.”
His trip demonstrates the commitment to deepen the relationship between the two countries, and to be a force for growth and stability in the region.
Bhupendra Patel, who accompanied the Australian PM to Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, welcomed Mr Albanese.
“Cricket is one thing that binds both countries, and it will be great to see the leaders of India and Australia on the first day of the matches in Ahmedabad,” Australian High Commissioner Barry O’Farrell said.
India leads the Border-Gavaskar series 2-1. From June 7 onwards, the team will face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final if they win the final Test.
