PM Modi is in Egypt at the invitation of Egyptian President El-Sisi. In 26 years, this is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Egypt.
Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly embraced PM Modi at the airport here in a special gesture.
His arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour.
After landing in Cairo, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “I am confident that this visit will strengthen India’s ties with Egypt. I am looking forward to talking with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and attending other programs.”
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly welcomed me at the airport with a special gesture. “May India-Egypt relations flourish and benefit the people of both countries,” he said.
When the Prime Minister arrived at the hotel here, members of the Indian community waved the Indian tricolor and chanted ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Vande Mataram’.
An Egyptian woman dressed in a saree greeted Modi with ‘Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Chhodenge’ from the movie Sholay.
He expressed surprise when the lady said she knew very little Hindi and had never been to India as he listened to the song appreciatively.
Aap Misr ki beti ho ya Hindustan ki beti ho ((Nobody will be able to tell if you’re Egyptian or Indian),” Prime Minister Modi said.
It will be PM Modi’s first meeting with Egyptian President El-Sisi on Sunday.
There will be a roundtable discussion between the Prime Minister and his counterpart Madbouly, the head of the Indian Unit of the Egyptian Cabinet.
Modi will meet Egypt’s grand mufti, Dr Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, and hold discussions with prominent Egyptian intellectuals later in the day.
PM Modi will visit the Dawoodi Bohra community-renovated Al-Hakim mosque on Sunday.
In India, the Bohra community originated from the Fatima dynasty, and they have renovated the mosque since the 1970s.
In honor of those Indian troops who sacrificed their lives in the ultimate act of valour for Egypt during World War I, he will visit the Heliopolis War Cemetery.
While this memorial was built by the Commonwealth, it is dedicated to the 3,799 Indian troops who died in Egypt during the First World War.
Within six months of President El-Sisi’s visit to India as chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations, the Prime Minister paid a “very quick reciprocal visit” to Egypt.
Egypt has been invited as a special guest to the G-20 Summit in India in September by El-Sisi.
