PM In Morbi: A century-old bridge collapsed in Morbi, Gujarat, on Sunday, killing 135 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the site today.
In Morbi, the Prime Minister is expected to visit the incident site and the civil hospital where the injured are being treated. During a high-level meeting last night, he was briefed on the rescue efforts.
Four days after it reopened, the British-era suspension bridge in Morbi collapsed on Sunday night. According to officials, 47 children, several women, and the elderly have died.
When the bridge collapsed, nearly 500 people were on it. Even so, the 150-year-old structure could only support about 125 people.
According to documents, the bridge was opened to the public five months ahead of schedule. Sandipsinh Zala, chief of the Morbi municipal agency, confirmed to NDTV on Sunday that the Oreva Group did not obtain a fitness certificate from the civic authorities before opening the bridge.
As part of its contract, the company was required to keep the bridge shut for at least eight to twelve months for maintenance and repairs. A police report said it was “seriously irresponsible and careless” to open the bridge last week.
According to officials, more than 400 tickets were sold on Sunday, resulting in overcrowding on the “hanging bridge”, which collapsed the old metal cables. The bridge collapsed under the weight of the huge crowd, according to sources at Gujarat’s forensics laboratory.
During the seven-month renovation by the Oreva Group, some of the old cables of the Morbi bridge were not changed. So far, nine people have been arrested in the case. Among them are managers of Oreva, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors, and three security guards.
In the Supreme Court, a Public Interest Litigation has been filed seeking a judicial inquiry into the collapse of the Morbi bridge. In addition, the PIL requests that the states conduct a survey of all “old and risky” structures in their jurisdictions. On November 14, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal.
Boats and divers searched the Machchhu River this morning, although nearly all those believed missing have now been found.
After the bridge snapped, people fell on top of each other. In videos, many were seen desperately clinging to the bridge’s remains, while others were seen swimming to safety. Bhupendra Patel has declared a day of mourning for the victims of the bridge collapse on Wednesday.
