Election Commissioners will be appointed by a panel including the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition, and the Chief Justice of India, in a landmark ruling.
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court said the President will appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and two election commissioners who oversee elections across the country.
It’s the Election Commission of India’s responsibility to ensure elections are fair and maintain their purity, said a five-judge Constitution bench.
“In a democracy, elections have to be pure or else they’ll end badly.”
Judges said the Election Commission should be appointed like the CBI.
Currently, the President picks the chief election commissioner and two commissioners for six years, and they’re usually former bureaucrats on the Prime Minister’s recommendation
For fair elections, petitioners wanted a collegium-like system for appointing election commissioners.
