Five unidentified assailants shot dead a Dera Sacha Sauda follower in Punjab’s Faridkot district on Thursday, police said.
He was opening his dairy shop in Kotkapura when he was shot and the incident was captured by a CCTV camera, they said, adding his gunman also sustained bullet wounds.
Currently on bail, Singh was accused of theft of a ‘bir’ (copy) of the Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot in 2015.
Bhagwant Mann appealed for peace and said no one would be allowed to disturb it.
The state of Punjab is a peaceful state where mutual brotherhood is very strong…No one will be allowed to disturb the peace…Strict instructions to the civil and police officials to maintain peace and tranquility,” said Mann in a tweet.
Police have some leads and are working on them, said Inspector General of Police (Faridkot Range) Pradeep Kumar Yadav.
Assailants will be arrested soon, he said.
CCTV footage of the incident showed the five riding two bikes, which police were also examining.
As a result of sacrilege incidents in Faridkot in 2015, protests broke out in the district. Two people were killed in Behbal Kalan and some people were injured in Kotkapura in Faridkot after police fired at protesters.
In August 2017, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of raping two women disciples at his ashram in Sirsa, where the dera is headquartered.
