Two planes – a Boeing B-17 bomber and a small plane – collided in mid-air at an air show at Dallas Executive Airport in Texas on Saturday, immediately crashing to the ground and bursting into flames. The report said six people, including all crew members, were feared killed in the collision.
Dramatic shots taken by airshow attendees show the larger B-17 bomber flying in a straight line not too high off the ground, while the smaller aircraft – the Bell P-63 Kingcobra, in its direction from the left Appears to be injured. The small plane crashes over a B-17, a World War II plane, and the two planes are immediately broken into pieces, the scene shows.
Within seconds, the planes are on the ground, covered in fireballs.
The collision occurred during the Wings Over Dallas Airshow at Dallas Executive Airport. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said its agents and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate the incident.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said in a tweet that there are still details that are “unknown or unconfirmed”.
“As many of you have now noticed, a terrible tragedy occurred during an airshow in our city today. Many details are unknown or unconfirmed at this time. The National Transportation Safety Board commanded the crash site with the Dallas Police Department and continues to provide Dallas Fire-Rescue support,” he said.
The four-engined bomber B-17 played a major role in winning the air battle against Germany in World War II. With an activist reputation, it became the most widely produced bomber ever produced. The P-63 Kingcobra was a fighter aircraft developed by Bell Aircraft during the same war, but only used in combat by the Soviet Air Force.
One of the last major B-17 accidents occurred on October 2, 2019, when seven people were killed in a crash at an airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
