The world number one has withdrawn from next week’s ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters event because he’s banned from entering the country.

World number one Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week’s ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters, organisers said on Sunday. Djokovic can’t enter the United States because he’s not vaccinated against Covid-19, but he petitioned for special permission. Next week is Indian Wells ATP 1000 in the California desert, followed by Miami, which Djokovic may miss unless US authorities change their minds.

Unvaccinated international travelers still can’t enter the country, with the Transportation Security Administration indicating the policy won’t change until mid-April.

Djokovic was deported from Australia shortly before the 2022 Australian Open because of his vaccination status.

Due to the travel restrictions, he also missed the US Open last year.

In January, he won the 2023 Australian Open for a record-equaling 22nd Grand Slam singles title.

In Dubai last week, he won 20 matches before losing to Daniil Medvedev on Friday.

Nikoloz Basilashvili will replace Djokovic on the field.

US Open organizers and the US Tennis Association both supported Djokovic’s entry request on Friday.
