Border Clash: In the clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal last week, no soldier was killed or seriously injured, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Opposition demanded a discussion on the border issue following his statement.
After the border clash, Mr Singh said that the government spoke to China through diplomatic channels. He emphasized that “our forces are ready to face any challenge on the border.”
In response, the Opposition said it was not satisfied with just a statement and wanted to discuss the crucial border issue. Shaktisinh Gohil, a Congress MP, told NDTV that the government should not avoid a discussion due to its “attitude.”
Mallikarjuna Kharge moved an adjournment motion earlier, asking for a suspension of proceedings and a debate on the border clash. In Rajya Sabha, the Trinamool Congress also sought a discussion on the matter.
As soon as both Houses met, proceedings were adjourned as the Opposition insisted that the crucial border clash issue be discussed before any other matter. In response to today’s question on Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Amit Shah has accused the Congress of disrupting proceedings.
Earlier, Rajnath Singh addressed the Lok Sabha, and he will address the Rajya Sabha at 12.30 p.m. today. His meeting with military and diplomatic leaders was held ahead of the meeting. Additionally, he met with the Prime Minister and cabinet colleagues to fine-tune the centre’s response.
In the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, several Congress members have requested a discussion on the border clash. In Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Raghav Chadha and RJD’s Manoj Jha requested a discussion. A motion to adjourn the Lok Sabha has been moved by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who is also the leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.
Over the issue, the Congress launched a multi-pronged attack on the government yesterday. He said, “We are one with the nation on matters of national security, and would not like to politicize it. However, the Modi government should be honest about Chinese transgressions and the construction near the LAC since April 2020.”
Congress’ communications chief Jairam Ramesh said the Opposition has been trying to “wake up” the government on Chinese actions, but the ruling BJP is keeping silent to “protect its political image”. China’s audacity was allegedly stoked by the Narendra Modi government’s tendency to “suppress” the border issue, according to the party.
In addition, Congress tweeted a video of Prime Minister Modi’s speech after the Galwan clash, in which he said “no one occupied our land or entered India and none of our posts are under foreign occupation”. China would not have raised its eyes towards India if it had been named.
India-China relations nosedived following the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh in 2020. It is widely believed that more than five Chinese military officers and soldiers died. Although China has acknowledged that five Chinese military officers and soldiers died, the death toll is believed to be higher.
