The two people arrested on Tuesday, Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and editor-in-chief of NewsClick, and Amit Chakravarty, the head of Human Resources, were sent to seven days of police remand on Wednesday.

Two people, including the founder and editor-in-chief of NewsClick Prabir Purkayastha, were arrested on Tuesday by the Delhi Police after they were quizzed in their office following raids on his premises. According to police officials, the raids violated the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

In total, 37 male suspects and nine female suspects have been questioned at the premises by the Delhi Police.

Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty have been arrested for the search, seizure, and detention carried out today in connection with a UAPA case registered with the Special Cell. According to the police, 37 male suspects were questioned at the house, while nine female suspects were questioned at their respective residences.

As part of the investigation, digital devices, documents, etc., were seized and collected for examination.

In light of a crackdown launched earlier this morning by Delhi Police against NewsClick and its journalists following an FIR filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Prabir Purkayastha and Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh were brought to the special cell offices in the national capital.

An online news portal’s office in the national capital was sealed on Tuesday afternoon by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

Over 30 locations were raided in connection with a case registered on August 17 under the UAPA and other sections of the IPC, such as 153A (promoting enmity between two groups) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

A New York Times report published on August 10 claimed NewsClick was part of a global network funded by Neville Roy Singham, an American billionaire.

Singham is known for supporting far-left causes and for running a lavishly funded influence campaign to defend and promote China.

The Chinese government’s media machine is also said to be close to Mr Singham.
