New Party Names For Team Thackeray: There will be a new party symbol for the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena: the mashaal (flaming torch). According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), this was announced today. Shiv Sena Balasahebanchi (Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena) is the rival party led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
As of yet, no party symbol has been assigned to the Shinde faction. A request for three fresh options has been made to the party by tomorrow morning at 10am. It was earlier rejected by the poll body due to the religious symbolism of gada (blunt mace) and trishul (trident). According to reports, Rajiv Kumar has taken a hard stance against political parties using symbols with religious connotations.
Three names and symbols had been given by the Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena. According to sources in the Election Commission, the first choice was Shiv Sena Balasaheb Thackeray, the second pick was Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray, and the third choice was Shiv Sena Balasaheb Prabodhankar Thackeray.
As a result of the Election Commission assigning the name ‘Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ to the faction, the Thackeray group expressed satisfaction. Bhaskar Jadhav, a Thackeray loyalist and former Maharashtra minister, said he was happy that the three names that matter to us most – Uddhav ji, Balasaheb and Thackeray – have been retained.
In the midst of a tussle between rival factions over which is the “real” Shiv Sena, Thackeray challenged the Election Commission’s freeze on the Shiv Sena symbol and name.
The former Maharashtra Chief Minister had complained to the Delhi High Court that Saturday’s order had frozen the party’s name and symbol without hearing, which was “against the principles of natural justice”.
In its writ petition to Delhi High Court against Election Commission, Mr Thackeray said: “Despite Uddhav Thackeray’s request for oral hearing, the Election Commission of India acted with undue haste and froze the symbol of the political party Shiv Sena led by the Petitioner without providing him with an opportunity to be heard. The symbol has been used by the party since its inception in 1966 and is intrinsically associated with it.”
ECI has frozen the symbol out of malice in law, according to his petition. The election to 166 Andheri East Assembly Constituency is not being contesting by the group led by Eknath Shinde. As a result, the situation apprehended by ECI requiring freezing of the symbol does not exist.”
In the November 3 byelection in Mumbai’s Andheri East constituency, the ECI had asked team Thackeray and the rival Shinde faction to choose new names and symbols.
After Mr Shinde led 48 MLAs in a coup backed by the BJP against Mr Thackeray, the Sena versus Sena saga began in June. Both factions have claimed the party’s name since then. Shinde then formed a government with the BJP. Both sides claim the party. Mr Shinde, who has the support of a majority of party MPs and MLAs, said he had a better claim to the party founded by Mr Thackeray’s father Bal Thackeray.
